Glacier tours

Many glacier tongues flow south from the Vatnajökull icecap. These tongues move about a meter a day and play a central role in shaping the landscape. Because of the frequent changes, access to glacier tongues varies and crevices can be dangerous to explore without a local guide.

The largest glacier in Europe offers more possibilities than could ever be explored. If you would like to experience the grand icecap, it's only a 45 minute drive from the main road F985 to Vatnajökull.

Access to the glacier is good, but recommended only for four wheel drive cars or by a specially equipped 4WD super jeep. Traveling on the glacier itself requires a super jeep or snowmobile. Several companies provide guided tours for glacier walking and ice climbing.

From Coast to Mountains is a small family business offering diverse tours to the glaciers, mountains and the coast of southeast Iceland. In the summertime they specialize in birdwatching trips to Ingólfshöfði nature reserve, the home of thousands of nesting puffins and other seabirds. Guests are transported in a tractor drawn hey-cart to the cape, from where they are taken on a guided tour to visit the puffins. The tour is suitable for the whole family.
